Technology Integration
One of my main concerns this semester has been effective technology integration, from curriculum to the use of software/hardware, and blogging. Tech integration includes:- Learning the basics of using technology.
- Using technology to support instruction.
- Integrating new technology into classroom practice.
- Discovering new uses for technology tools or designing projects that combine multiple technologies.
- Focusing on cooperative, project-based and interdisciplinary work with technology being just one of many tools that students use.
I found an interesting article in The Journal called, Five Obstacles to Technology Integration at a Small Liberal Arts University. The obstacles include lack of a clear vision and faculty participation. This year, I believe that Studio Foundation is more actively addressing and overcoming these obstacles. For some time Academic Computing/Computer Arts has been working with Studio Foundation to create what the article refers to as an "enabling environment" that includes universal student access, reliable networks, multiple opportunities for training and consulting, and "a faculty ethos which values experimentation and toleration of falters." This semester we are looking at curriculum and classroom activities. Some of us are exploring tools such as blogging and podcasting.
The one important feature of technology is that is dynamic and constantly changing. However, the core components art education remain the same. How can we develop a model for 21st century art and learning that promotes both and helps prepare faculty and students for the challenges of thriving in a changing environment? This academic year we are addressing these issues and more. I encourage folks to continue to engage in the discussion and be proactive about finding solutions.
