Time - Gender Jamming
Wednesdays 8:00 am - 1:00 pm, Spring 2012

The work we will generate in this course will pose questions about gender. We will examine gender from many perspectives including personal, cultural, historical and biological. Exploring multiplicities of core gender (the gender we feel to be), gender expression (how we externalize gender) and sexuality (who we like to be sexual with) we will create a powerful stew of ideas. We will express these ideas creating time-based work in various forms including video, artist books, performance, design and installation.
We will start by creating a framework from which to better understand the various aspects of time-based media in art and design becoming more consciously aware of how the element of time can be used expressively in our work. This will include learning to use sound / video capture and editing tools.
Concurrently, through readings, presentation and discussion we will identify areas of interest within our subject matter that will be applied to our work. Class time will include viewing work by various artists in performance, photography, film, video and other media, independent class work and frequent critiques.
Materials
The following materials will needed for this class:
My Gender Workbook: Kate Bornstein. This text is available in the bookstore and required for our class. In addition I'll be assigning various online readings as we continue our explorations.
Fire-wire equipped hard drive, at least 120GB, 7200 RPM or Macintosh Laptop running OSX. You will be producing BIG files this semester. USB drives will not be adequate! We will be editing video using Final Cut Express and you will be using your drive or Macintosh for the primary Scratch Disk. The data transmission rate on a USB connection is too slow for this. A good analogy here is a drinking through a thin straw (USB vs. a thick straw (Fire-wire)). If own a drive that does not meet these requirements you are required to buy one that meets the above requirements. NO EXCUSES
Here are two suggestions for drives that will work fine:
· LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 500 GB FireWire 800/ FireWire 400/USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive
· Western Digital My Book Studio 1 TB USB 2.0/FireWire 800/400, Desktop External Hard Drive (this has usb and firewire)
In addition, you will need Five DVD-R disks and your sketchbook. Other materials will be addressed on an individual basis.
JANUARY 18th - FIRST CLASS

First Project: Superpower (two week project) Choose a single super power and communicate through a sequence of images your unique way of seeing the world with this new-found power.

· Do the exercises on pg. 140 and 141 (all three).
· During the exercises, select a product that makes you feel like more of a woman or man. Select a second product that makes you feel good about being who you are. Bring to class the actual products or photos of the products (from an ad or a photo you take).
FEBRUARY 8TH - FOURTH CLASS

Second Project; Gender Shift (two week project) Applying some of the ideas we've generated in our class exercises, create a sequence of photographs where the subject goes through various shifts in gender. The image sequence will be presented as a series of projected images to the class.
Due Next Week: Start working on Gender Shift. You will have 3 hours in the next class to work with your partner so come in prepared with props, cameras or any materials you need.
FEBRUARY 15TH - FIFTH CLASS

Third Project; Gender Mash-up Video (four week project) Find an existing piece of text such as a speech, poem, advertisement, a few lines from a movie or play, paragraph from a book or other source. Think about the meaning and gender of the original text. Consider how you might alter and invent a new gendered meaning through reading/recording the text and adding video. The final piece will be under one minute in duration.
Due Next Week:
· Gender Shift; image presentation, ready to present from your hard-drive.
· Gender Mash-up Video; Bring source text into class for audio recording. It must be transcribed and typed out. You will be handing in a copy of the text.
FEBRUARY 22ND - SIXTH CLASS
Critique and Presentation; Gender Shift
Tech Recitation 1: Introduction to the SF sound recorders and basic audio editing.
Due Next Week: Gender Mash-up; Sound Component of video project on hard-drive.
FEBRUARY 29th - SEVENTH CLASS
Tech Recitation 2: Camera, lighting, and tripod. Introduction to SF camcorders, lighting kits, tripods.
Due Next Class: Gender Mash-up; Video Component exported to FCE and saved to hard-drive. Any other stills, sound or video footage should also be brought in for editing
